Performance management charts visually represent your fitness, fatigue, and form over time. Understanding these metrics can empower you to optimize your training, prevent burnout, and peak for critical events. Let’s delve into each component:
The Fitness component, often represented by Chronic Training Load (CTL), reflects your long-term training load and overall fitness level. CTL is calculated based on the cumulative effect of your training stress over several weeks or months. It provides insight into your aerobic endurance and ability to sustain efforts over extended periods.
How to interpret CTL:
Increasing CTL: Consistently challenging yourself with structured training will lead to a gradual increase in CTL. This indicates improved fitness and endurance.
Plateau or Decline in CTL: Stagnation or a decrease in CTL may indicate a need to reassess your training plan. It could signal overtraining, insufficient recovery, or a lack of progressive overload.
Fatigue, represented by Acute Training Load (ATL), reflects your short-term training stress and immediate fatigue level. ATL provides insight into your recent training intensity and the resulting fatigue accumulation.
How to interpret ATL:
High ATL: Intense training sessions or a sudden increase in training volume can lead to a spike in ATL. While short-term increases are ordinary and necessary for adaptation, prolonged high ATL without adequate recovery can lead to burnout or injury.
Balancing ATL and Recovery: Managing ATL alongside recovery periods is crucial for optimizing performance. Strategic tapering before important events allows ATL to decrease, enabling you to enter races or critical rides with reduced fatigue and heightened readiness.
Form, calculated as Training Stress Balance (TSB), represents the balance between your Fitness (CTL) and Fatigue (ATL). TSB indicates your readiness to perform at your best, with positive values suggesting fresher legs and enhanced performance potential, while negative values indicate accumulated fatigue.
How to interpret TSB:
Positive TSB: A positive TSB indicates a state of freshness and readiness to perform. This is often desirable leading up to critical events, as it signifies a tapering phase where fatigue decreases while fitness remains high.
Negative TSB: A negative TSB suggests accumulated fatigue, which may impair performance. However, strategically inducing a negative TSB through periods of hard training followed by adequate recovery can lead to super-compensation, where performance peaks following a rest period.
Set Goals: Define your cycling objectives, whether completing a century ride, improving your climbing prowess, or competing in races.
Plan Your Training: Structure your training plan to gradually increase your Fitness (CTL) while managing your Fatigue (ATL) to prevent burnout and optimize performance.
Monitor Progress: Regularly review your performance management chart to track CTL, ATL, and TSB changes. Look for trends and patterns to assess the effectiveness of your training regimen.
Adjust Accordingly: Modify your training plan based on your observations. Increase training volume or intensity to boost CTL, incorporate rest or recovery rides to manage ATL, and strategically taper before essential events to maximize TSB.
By harnessing the power of performance management charts and understanding the nuances of Fitness (CTL), Fatigue (ATL), and Form (TSB), you can unlock your cycling potential and achieve your goals with confidence. Remember, consistency, balance, and intelligent training practices are essential to sustained improvement and enjoyment on the bike.

Over the past three years, we have proudly offered Map My Tracks Plus at a consistent price, providing our users with an affordable and feature-rich experience. During this time, we have continuously worked to improve our platform, introducing new features and ensuring the highest level of service.
However, as our community has grown, so have our operational costs. These costs include server maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and ongoing development to keep Map My Tracks at the forefront of tracking technology. Despite our best efforts to absorb these increased costs, we need to adjust our subscription pricing to ensure our service’s sustainability and continued enhancement.
Beginning December 1, 2023, the new pricing for Map My Tracks Plus will be:
Monthly subscription: $4.99, €4.49, £3.99
Annual subscription: $49.99, €44.99, £39.99
We understand that any price change can be an adjustment, and we want to emphasize that we have withheld increasing the subscription for as long as possible. Even with this adjustment, Map My Tracks Plus remains competitively priced within the industry, and we continue to be committed to delivering exceptional value to our users.
You do not need to do anything if you wish to continue your Map My Tracks subscription. It will automatically update to the new subscription at the end of your current billing period.

We know that coaches have a lot of data to analyse from their athletes, and sometimes not enough time, which is why we have created a ‘My athletes’ dashboard. Once athletes have granted a coach access to their activity the coach can open the athlete’s training room.
Within the training room coaches are able to analyse in detail recent workouts, trends, calendar and peak performances and more.
To get started the athlete/coach set up process is:
1. The coach must first follow the athlete on Map My Tracks.
2. The athlete then grants the coach access by making them a ‘Close friend/coach’ in Settings > Access.
Once that is done the coach will see their athletes in Explore > My athletes and have access to their training rooms.
Coaches do not need a Plus account but the athlete will need an active Plus account to allow access to the Training Room.
We have more coach/athlete features in the pipeline so watch this space. For now, enjoy the new tools.

For those of you that like to do some number crunching on your power stats then the recent update to the Map My Tracks app might interest you. We’ve introduced a summary of your peak power over different time intervals giving you an at-a-glance view of your stats.
In amongst the stats are a few things that get automatically detected from your ride date. FTP, FTHR, VO2max and MAP are all estimated when certain criteria are met. As these are normally best tested in a lab the values are only relevant when the app detects that you have performed at a steady and high state.
This is only useful if you ride with a power meter. If that’s you then check out the latest version of the app in the App Store and Google Play.
However, the physical demands of these events can also lead to nausea, which can be a frustrating and uncomfortable symptom to deal with. We’ll explore some strategies for coping with nausea during ultra-distance events.
Hydration
Dehydration is a common cause of nausea, so it is essential to drink enough fluids during the event. Aim to drink water or a sports drink every 15-20 minutes to maintain hydration levels. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks, as they can exacerbate nausea.
Food
Consuming food during an ultra-distance event is crucial to maintain energy levels, but it can also cause nausea. Avoid consuming high-fat or high-fiber foods before or during the event, as they can be hard to digest. Instead, opt for easily digestible carbohydrates such as gels, chews, or sports drinks.
Pace
Overexerting oneself during an ultra-distance event can cause nausea, especially when the body is not used to the intensity of the activity. Try to maintain a steady pace throughout the event, and avoid sudden bursts of activity that can lead to nausea.
Breathing Techniques
Nausea can also be a symptom of anxiety or stress. Practicing breathing techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, can help reduce stress levels and alleviate nausea.
Medication
For extreme cases of nausea, over-the-counter medications such as antacids or anti-nausea medications may be necessary. However, it is essential to consult with a medical professional before taking any medication during an ultra-distance event.
Mental Techniques
Focusing on positive thoughts and visualization can also help reduce nausea. Remind yourself of why you are participating in the event and focus on the positive aspects of the experience.
Nausea can be a common symptom during ultra-distance events, but there are various ways to cope with it. By maintaining hydration levels, consuming easily digestible carbohydrates, pacing oneself, practicing breathing techniques, and utilizing mental techniques, participants can reduce the impact of nausea on their performance and enjoy the experience and have fun.
Map My Tracks has launched a Clubs service which provides sports clubs with a dedicated app of their own that features club activity, membership management and group messaging. Map My Tracks has added to its range of features to provide sports clubs with an app of their own that takes just a few minutes to set up.
Once set up, it results in a web app, that can be added to your phone’s home screen, that functions just like a native app downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. With a club app being able to be set up, and branded, in minutes it means that just about every sports club can provide its members with a centralized source for rides, routes, messaging and membership management.
The Map My Tracks Clubs app is based on years of work with its local club, Canterbury Bicycle Club. It brings together all the features that have proved invaluable to them with many being based on their experience during Covid lock down periods. During each lock down period the app became the club’s preferred way to organise group rides and activity and limit capacity. It also, acted as a way to keep everyone up-to-date with club activity and news.
Since our launch in 2007, Map My Tracks has pioneered the use of mobile phones to record and live stream performance telemetry for sports like cycling and running. The club app builds on this experience and includes a live map allowing club members to see where everyone else might be when out on club rides. Great for making sure everyone stays safe and doesn’t get lost.
“It made sense to bring together all the experience we’ve gained from the work done with one of our local club and make it available to all clubs,” said Nick Tatt of Map My Tracks. “For us, this initial release is just the start. We have grand plans to provide every club in the country with an app of its own, putting behind us all the days of having to check three or four different platforms just to find out what is happening on the weekend club ride.”
Map My Tracks Clubs is free to use for clubs up to 30 members. For clubs with more than 30 members there is a £12 monthly subscription. Club apps can be branded to suit your club colours and includes permission control over how the app is used by club members.
You might want to create a collection from a recent hike over a few days or from rides completed over several days. In fact, collections are so versatile that they can be any group of activities with each collection topped and tailed with cover images and descriptions.
Collections can remain private or if you prefer to share your collection with other Map My Tracks users then you can make it public for everyone to see. Either way, you are in control.
Collections are made by first tagging your activities. Use the same tag across all the activities you wish to include in the collection, then from your tag list page you can convert the tag into a collection.
Tags can be added to activities either on the website or through the app. For now, collections are only available on the website but they will be soon be also in the app.
As ever, let us know what you think. If you need any guidance on using Collections then get in touch with us at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
We can’t wait to see how you start using Collections. Get started here →
We’ve kicked things off with a few Collections to browse:
Social cards feature your photo of choice, or your activity map, together with a summary of the distance, time and elevation. The social cards are a handy way to show off you latest hike or bike ride with friends.
Social cards are just the latest way to share your activities. Activity Moment videos also let you showcase your activities and result in an animated video ready to share on social networks. Text links can also be shared that includes a summary of all the activity details.
We can’t wait to see how everyone uses this on social networks. Tag posts using #mapmytracks so we can follow your progress.
Map My Tracks will be temporarily unavailable from 08:30 (BST) on April 7 while we undertake some essential maintenance. The service will return within a few hours.
Live tracking will not be available while the service is offline. If you have any questions please contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
For this I am sorry. I appreciate that some of the users that the spammers have targeted have received many, many emails as a result of the comments being posted. I know how annoying this is but rest assured that no account credentials were compromised and no accounts were breached. The exploit that the spammers took advantage of chose random user IDs to spoof comments on behalf of other users.
We have already taken steps to halt this action and are in the process of adapting how comments are posted in future to combat this issue. One side effect of how the emails were sent means that some users will still be receiving emails over the coming days. These emails were actually sent several days ago but due to how mail servers work they were held back and only now being delivered. Unfortunately, we have no way of recalling these emails as they have already left our system. It goes without saying but please ignore these emails and do not click on any links within them.
Should you wish to manage what emails you receive from Map My Tracks in future then please update your preferences.
We will update this post with further details over the coming 24 hours. Should anyone be concerned, or have questions, please contact us at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) where we can assist you further.
Again, I apologize for the hassle, and concern, this has no doubt caused.

Virtual events on Map My Tracks make every mile count and are a great way to embark on long distance challenges remotely. A virtual event takes your activities and uses each mile covered to propel you along a virtual route. Along the way you can pass point of interests, explore the terrain and compete against others to get to the finish line first.
Why not challenge your friends and family to walk the West Highland Way over the next two weeks or ride the Scottish North Coast 500 over the weekend. Want a solo adventure? Create your own virtual event to keep yourself motivated.
As with all events it’s simple to get started. Create your event then upload, or draw, your route. After that, invite the participants to join the event. Once your event has started all activities uploaded by participants will contribute to their distance along the virtual route.
Participants can use the Map My Tracks app to track live and have their progress updated in real-time or record their activity with compatible devices and upload their activities after they have finished each workout. Either way, the distance covered goes towards completing the virtual event.
Map My Tracks virtual events can be set up using the Event Planner and be viewed on the Map My Tracks app for iOS and Android as well as within Map My Tracks Events on the website.
Get started and set up your first virtual event. It’s free.
It’s now possible to remove a person from following you. This might be useful if you don’t know the person following you and would prefer that your activities are not in their activity feed. It also stops them from getting push notifications about your activity.
When you remove a person from following you it doesn’t stop them from following you again. We have plans to roll out user blocking which will be available in the coming weeks.
The option to remove followers is currently only available on the website. Head to your profile page then click on the ‘Followers’ link to see who’s following you. From there you can remove followers.
For now, we hope this small update helps to give you more control over your privacy.

Data validation - Due to various changes in recent versions of Android some, but not all, devices need to allow Map My Tracks to run in the background. We’ve added in data checks to detect if your activity has been recorded fully. In the event that the app detects irregular data it will now suggest that Map My Tracks is allowed to run fully when used in the background.
Various layout improvements - The app now makes use of your device’s full screen to provide a great experience on all pages. A host of other small refinements are dotted around the app.
We hope you like the updated Android app which can be downloaded from Google Play.
With your privacy as one of our top priorities today we have launched automatic privacy zones detection.
Starting today, all new activities will be scanned to check if you regularly start or finish in the same location. If we detect that you do often start or finish in the same place a new privacy zone will be created for you. The privacy zone will mask the exact start or end location so anyone viewing your public activities is not able to determine where you home or place of work might be.
Privacy zones can be edited, or created on the website at Settings > Privacy. You can choose to disable auto-detection altogether, or choose to ignore any zones that have been automatically created for you. Likewise, privacy zones can be deleted.
Our default set up for new users is all offline. This means that users have to choose to share their activities publicly when they wish to. We wanted to make sure that when our users do share their activities publicly that their privacy is protected by default. Automatic privacy zones will work in the background without users needing to configure their account to protect their privacy. Automatic privacy zones will help to do that for you.
We hope you like this new feature. If you have any feedback about this or any other features then please do get in touch at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
We’re thrilled to welcome HealthFit app to the Map My Tracks family.
From today, anyone that uses an Apple Watch to record their outdoor pursuits can sync it automatically to Map My Tracks through the HealthFit app.
HealthFit is a third-party app that uses the Map My Tracks API to seamlessly sync Apple Watch workouts over to Map My Tracks. It’s easy to set up and get started and once configured the HealthFit app will take over and do work in the background keeping your Map My Tracks account up to date.
All activities synced across using HealthFit will be set to Private but if you would prefer to share them with followers on Map My Tracks then you can edit each one on Map My Tracks.
The HealthFit app is available to download from the App Store for $2.99.
It’s great to see our API being using for really useful tools like HealthFit. If you are a developer and wish to use the Map My Tracks API for your project then please contact us at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
We’re thrilled to welcome Polar to the Map My Tracks family. From today, anyone that uses a Polar watch to record their outdoor pursuits can sync it automatically to Map My Tracks. Polar joins the existing set of services, that includes Garmin Connect and Fitbit, that makes is easy for anyone that enjoys getting outdoors to keep all their records in one place.
To get started first connect your Map My Tracks account with your Polar Flow account. On the website go to Upload > Connect to devices. On the app go to Settings > Services to complete the connection. Once connected, your Polar activities will be synced across to Map My Tracks. After that, all new activities synced to Polar Flow will also be synced to Map My Tracks. It will not sync historical activities. If these are needed on Map My Tracks then they can be upload manually.
By default, any activity synced from Polar will be made private. It’s possible to alter this by editing the connection settings on the website at Upload > Connect to devices.
As ever, we are keen to hear from our community on what other services would be good to integrate with. Get in touch to let us know.
First things first, we’re sorry for the glitches that presented themselves this week. We know that a lot of people rely on Map My Tracks and depend on it running smoothly. We can’t apologise enough for the hassle that is caused when things don’t work as expected.
We have some ambitious plans for Map My Tracks and to deliver these we have needed to upgrade the underlying infrastructure that Map My Tracks is built on. This has meant that a complete set of server upgrades has been completed this week. They’re bigger, faster and better!
We have spent the past few months planning this change and, we thought, we had everything covered for when the migration took place. That said, some unexpected side-effects presented themselves once the new system was under a full load of regular users.
We’ve been working through these issues over the past few days and I’m pleased to say that the apps and website are now back to normal with the added benefit of being on new infrastructure.
Once again, please accept my apologies for the inconvenience that this has caused. If you spot anything odd that we have not picked up then please do get in touch - .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
Nick - Map My Tracks
We’re thrilled to announce that a major new update to the Map My Tracks Android app is now available to download from Google Play.
We’ve been busy making sure that the app in general is much faster to use when browsing around. You’ll notice that maps load faster and that pages now include an infinite scroll that means you can easily browse more of your history or your friend’s activities. Some subtle changes to the page layouts mean everything is clearer and easier to read.
We’ve also made sure that the app stays in sync your website history. Now, if you upload activities to the website your phone stays in sync without needing to manually download it. This works great if you have connected your account to Garmin Connect or Fitbit. All the activities synced from these services automatically appear in the app on your phone keeping everything in one place.
Photos take center stage. When you pin a photo to an activity it will show in your profile and activity feed instead of the route map.
Other all round improvements make this version faster and even easier to use.
We hope you enjoy the update.
At Map My Tracks we have a global community of people that love getting outdoors for fitness or just for fun. Behind the scenes at Map My Tracks HQ we are a small team of three people who are passionate about making sure our community of users trusts us with their data and love using our service.
We take this responsibility very seriously and work as hard as we can to make sure that Map My Tracks is the product, not our users. It’s true that a lot of the service is free to use which suggests that user data is what we want to sell to advertisers, but this cannot be further from the truth. To that end, we recently removed all third-party adverts from the site and also removed third-party tracking code from services that don’t need to know what you do on Map My Tracks.
The tipping point for us was when it became clear that some third-party services might not be handling data harvested from our users in their best interest. Gone are the adverts that track you around the web and give advertisers more insight into your web usage. Gone are tracking pixels from other services that they use to build a picture of user behaviour. Gone are erroneous cookies from third-party services that really don’t need to know what you do on Map My Tracks.
Map My Tracks was launched way back in 2007. Back then, the iPhone had just been launched and the notion of tracking, and sharing, your outdoor activities was a distant dream. Roll forward eleven years and in that time Map My Tracks has grown, and evolved, into the global service it is today. During that time, we introduced premium features under a PLUS subscription for users and event organisers. This represents the product, and our revenue stream, and provides us with resources to continue growing the service. No user data is sold to third-parties. It’s your data, not ours, so why would we sell it?
Given the nature of the service, we understand that not everyone wants to have their current location broadcast all over the web. Since its inception, the Map My Tracks app has always had the default tracking state as offline. Unlike most other sports tracking apps, we don’t force users to share their activities or upload them online. These are options that each user can choose to use when they wish but the default is private.
It’s important that when users do choose to make their activities public that we handle their data carefully. Privacy zones can be set around areas that users wish to mask from the public. Homes, workplaces or frequently visited locations are typical places to set up zones around. We recently upgraded how privacy zones work in response to some research into their set up. If you haven’t set them up yet, you can do so here.
Map My Tracks also stops search engine robots from indexing your activity pages so that it is intentionally difficult for search engines to build a profile of your data on Map My Tracks. This means that Map My Tracks pages don’t regularly appear in search engine results, but we think that the trade-off is worth it to provide a safe service for people to use.
We have always responded to requests from our users. We’d love to hear from you to find out what privacy concerns you may have and any ideas that would make you feel even safer when using Map My Tracks. Get in touch at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
The Map My Tracks heat map provides an overview of all your activities to show where you’ve been in the past. It’s a great way to explore your history of activities and remind your of the places you have been.
We’ve included options for you to explore your heat map by year and each activity type you do.
Your heat map can only be seen by you as they include both public and private activities that you have uploaded to Map My Tracks. By default, the heat map will not include any activities that start or finish within any privacy zone but there are options to override this to see all your activities. Keep in mind, that if you choose to share a screenshot of your heat map with your privacy zone data visible then it may disclose sensitive locations.
To view your own heat map login to Map My Tracks then choose Heat map from the main dropdown menu.
Heat maps are available for PLUS members. If you would like to view your own heat map then please upgrade to PLUS and your heat map will be available immediately.
We hope you enjoy browsing your heat map.
To help illustrate this we’ve developed a simple map that showcases all the incoming data, in real-time, on Map My Tracks.
It’s fascinating to see how the incoming data moves across the world from east to west during the day. As Australia is going to bed there tends to be more activity in America as they wake up and start their day.
We thought it might be interesting to analyse some popular segments on Map My Tracks like Box Hill to see where people come from. The results were fascinating.
We’ve highlighted Box Hill, Sawyers Hill and a segment close to Map My Track HQ that runs along the North Kent coast.
Southern extent of segment reach: Portsmouth (74 miles)
Northern extent of segment reach: St Albans (57 miles)
Western extent of segment reach: Winchester (73 miles)
Eastern extent of segment reach: Headcorn (65 miles)
Southern extent of segment reach: Forest Green (32 miles)
Northern extent of segment reach: Epping (38 miles)
Western extent of segment reach: Reading (49 miles)
Eastern extent of segment reach: Eltham (23 miles)
Southern extent of segment reach: Lympne (38 miles)
Northern extent of segment reach: N/A
Western extent of segment reach: Central London (76 miles)
Eastern extent of segment reach: Margate (30 miles)
Once you’re connected to friends Map My Tracks will keep you up-to-date with their activity by sending you various notifications. While notifications are a perfect way to stay in touch you may not want to receive all of them.
Now, you have full control over what notification you send and receive. You can choose what notifications you prefer to receive from your friends and also decide what notifications you send to your friends on Map My Tracks.
You can review, and make changes to, your notifications settings in your Account preferences.
We take our responsibility to protect our users’ privacy very seriously. So much so that none of the default settings on Map My Tracks force users to make their activity public. The starting point for every user is to keep everything private and only make it public if they choose to do so.
That said, when users do choose to make their activity public it’s important that the privacy zone tools we provide do their job to mask their data.
Through research undertaken by the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign into fitness tracking social networks like Map My Tracks they uncovered some problems with our initial implementation of privacy zones. We were provided with the details of the issue on February 22, 2018 by Hussain et al. who established an algorithm to deduce the place of interest within a privacy zone.
Their research included recommendations to further secure users’ data within a privacy zone to mitigate the risk of exposing the place of interest. Their recommendations, and a further set of our own, were implemented on February 23, 2018 and applied to new and established privacy zones.
We would encourage all our users to set up Privacy Zones over their home or place of work if they choose to make their activity public. Go to Settings > Privacy to set up as many as needed.
As we approach the end the year we take a look back on what’s been happening on Map My Tracks in 2017.
It’s been a busy year for us - and you. Across 2017 a total of 6,500,000km have been covered by Map My Tracks users. That’s 162 times around the world. You have been busy with it too, every minute a new activity is uploaded from users around the world.
During that time we have also been busy on your behalf updating the app and website to make Map My Tracks better and better. Aside for the multitude of mini updates across the year the more notable new features are Photos, Moments, Goals and some exciting work with Augmented Reality.
Outdoor activities are not just about how far or how fast you went, it’s also about the memories you make which is why we have gone all in with photos in 2017. The Map My Tracks app was updated to include options to take photos and pin photos to your activities.
That, in turn, fuelled the work on the Social Gallery that helps to show off all the great places that people visit.
Each activity uploaded to Map My Tracks has its key moments highlighted. Top speed, highest elevation, max. heart rate, segments covered, and more, are highlighted on the activity timeline.
We also added an option to create a beautifully crafted video of your Moments to share with others. Every activity uploaded to Map My Tracks can be turned into a video that includes photos, stats and route details - all ready to download, keep or share on social networks.
Who doesn’t like a goal? Goals were added in 2017 to let you challenge yourself. Goals can be set for any sport by distance, duration or activity. A detailed breakdown of your performance helps to keep you on track and achieve your goal.
With different wearable devices being used across different sports it’s helpful to be able to consolidate the data in one place. We’ve added options to automatically sync data to Map My Tracks from Garmin Connect and Fitbit. More services will follow in 2018.
If you use a compatible iOS phone you can now explore the landscape around you with Augmented Reality. Nearby mountain peaks, towns and other Map My Tracks users tracking live are all highlighted in the landscape. This is just the start. We’re really excited with the possibilities that Augmented Reality brings and 2018 will see more AR updates that make it even more useful.
We hope you have enjoyed the updates throughout the year. A lot of the features added have come from suggesttions from the Map My Tracks community. We want you to get the most out of Map My Tracks in 2018 so if you have an idea for a feature then get in touch to tell us about it.
Roll on 2018.
Map My Tracks has always been about tracking your rides, runs, hikes, outdoor activities and adventures. Over the past year we have steadily added more ways for you to be able to tell the whole story around your outdoor activities. Photos, goals and now in the latest update of the iOS app we’ve added augmented reality.

In this update you get a clean crisp dashboard, easy access to set goals, browse the Social Gallery and explore the landscape around you with augmented reality.
If you have a compatible phone* your can explore the landscape around your when you are out on your next adventure. If you have ever wondered what mountain peak was on the horizon, or what town was down the road, or where your friends are then you’ll love this feature. To discover what’s nearby first open the Activity Map then tap on the AR globe in the top corner. You’ll see nearby peaks, places and anyone that is tracking live - all in the landscape around you.
The new dashboard has a familiar but cleaner feel. It still shows off all your activity history across today, this week, month, year and all time. We’ve added a tab bar to launch into some of the most used sections of the app like the Social Gallery, your friends activities, goals and your own profile.
Who doesn’t like a goal? You can challenge yourself to complete a distance goals, or a duration-based goal. With the New Year just on the horizon it’s a great time to set your 2018 goals and monitor their progress on Map My Tracks.
If you’re a user of either Garmin Connect or Fitbit then it’s now possible to connect these accounts to Map My Tracks. Once connected any activities added to either Garmin Connect or Fitbit will be synced to your Map My Tracks accounts. It’s a great way to keep everything all in one place.
Map My Tracks v5 for iOS is now available to download from the App Store. The Android update is due out in a week or so.
We hope you like the update and enjoy exploring the landscape around you with augmented reality powered by Map My Tracks.
*Augmented reality compatible phones include the following that run iOS 11: iPhone 6s/6s Plus, iPhone 7/7 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 8/8 Plus.
Have you ever forgotten to stop tracking after finishing an activity then jump in the car and track all the way home? It happens.
To help fix the activity data we have added new tool that can trim off any unwanted data at the start or end of an activity. It’s super easy to use and very, very useful.
To trim an activity, first open it on the website then click ‘Actions’. There is now a ‘Trim activity’ option. Open the Trim Activity page then click on the elevation chart to set the new start and end points of the activity.
There’s a fine tune option to accurately nudge the start, and end, positions before trimming the unwanted data. Please keep in mind, once the data has been trimmed there is no undo option. The discarded data is permanently deleted.
It’s a small, but very handy, addition to the site that helps to keep your data as accurate as possible.
We hope you like the update.
To stay motivated and to keep track of your progress, why not set yourself some goals? Map My Tracks‘ PLUS members can now set goals to achieve in terms of distance, duration and/or number of activities over a specific period directly from within the app. For example, you may want to cycle 500 miles during one year, walk for 10 hours during one month or swim three times per week.
By using this feature, you can select the goal type (distance, duration or activities) for any sport over any period of time. You can set as many goals as you want and upcoming goals can be set for dates in the future. Previous goals can also be viewed.
Once a goal is set, you will see your target and your current performance. The target shows how much you need to do over the next day, week and month to achieve your goal. For instance, if you aimed to cycle 100 miles over one month, the target would be 3.1 miles per day and 20 miles per week. The performance information tells you how much you have already done towards your target in terms of daily, weekly and monthly performance. In addition, the bar summarises your progression by showing your total and the percentage achieved towards your goal.
You can quickly and easily set a goal in the Map My Tracks app or from the Map My Tracks website. To set a goal in the app, go to Goals > Set A Goal and then select the goal type (distance, duration or activities), the activity type (your chosen sport), the target, and the start and end date. Select save and start achieving your goals.
As we know that you love to take photos of your activities, and other users love to see them, we have made it simpler for you to take, upload and share pictures in the Map My Tracks iOS and Android apps. With this new feature, it is easier to pin as many photos as you want to your activities.
All Map My Tracks’ users can utilise our new in-app camera to take and upload photos from directly within the Map My Tracks app. This free tool means that you no longer need to open your camera from outside of the Map My Tracks app or to pin or email photos separately (although you can still do this manually via the Map My Tracks website, if you wish).
All users can take photos directly from within the app while recording an activity. PLUS members can also take and sync photos when tracking live. In the Android app, just select the camera icon in the bottom right of the map. In the iOS app, simply select the camera icon in the top right of the map.
If you are recording your track (but not tracking live), your photos will be stored in your phone as normal. When you have finished tracking your activity, you can pin your photos to your activity by selecting the Add Photo icon in the bottom right of your map. Select Upload Photos and choose the photos that you want to pin.
You have the choice to keep your photos private or to share them publicly. Photos can be pinned to an activity at any time after it was recorded.
If you are tracking live, it is even simpler. When using the in-app camera, your photos are automatically uploaded and synced online in real time. This neat new feature means that anyone who is following your live tracks can immediately see your photos.
If your camera is location-enabled, your photos will be geocoded, which means that your photos will be shown on your track in the places that they were taken. In addition, for all users, it is easy to add captions or to delete photos.
Use this great new feature to share your adventures with others.
The social gallery has been enhanced so that you can share many photos instead of just one. If you have pinned more than one photo to an activity, you and other users can now swipe sideways to view multiple photos. You can also see the activity map that shows where the photos were taken. This improved feature is free to all users and it shows photos that are related to tracks that are made public.
Download the latest version of the app from the App Store and Google Play.
Setting goals is a great way to keep yourself motivated and to help you achieve more. With that in mind we’ve recently focused our attention on making it easy to set a goal on Map My Tracks.
There are three types of goals that can be set. A distance goal, duration goal or activity goal. With each one you can select a specific sport, start/end and goal target.
Once a goal is set, you’ll get a breakdown of the daily, weekly or month target distance you need to cover in order to complete the goal on time. A countdown to the end date also helps keep you on track.
Goals are available to use by PLUS members and are only on website for now. The Map My Tracks app will have goals in the coming weeks.
You can access the goals section by clicking on your profile name in the main navigation, then Goals.
We hope you enjoy the new feature.
Map My Tracks Moments is a great way to turn your bike rides, hikes or outdoor adventures into a personal story ready to share with others or to keep for yourself.
Map My Tracks Moments highlights where and when your key milestones were like elevation, speed, cadence, power, heart rate. It automatically compiles these into a beautiful video, and if you’ve taken the time to pin some photos to your activity then they get included in the video as well.
Map My Tracks Moments videos can be created from any activity on the website or in the Map My Tracks app. Each one is personalised with its own colour and size and can be recreated as many times as you like.
We’ve made it super simple for each video to be downloaded or shared on sites like Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp or Twitter.
To share a Moments video created from the website first open the activity, click on ‘Moments’ then ‘Create video’. Your video will be built in seconds and when it’s ready download the MP4 to your PC/Mac then upload it to Facebook or Twitter.
Moments videos can be share from any app page that list activities. This includes History, Activity Feed and your Profile. Tap on the ‘Play’ icon under each of the activities to open the Moments page. Tap on ‘Create Moments video’ and personalise your video. When it’s ready choose to share it or download a copy to your device.
Map My Tracks Moments videos can be created in nine different languages including Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Polish and Portuguese.
Right now Moments can be created on the Map My Tracks website and iOS app. Our Android app users will be able to create Moments later on this week.
We look forward to seeing your Moments videos.

If there is a photo pinned to an activity the Activity Feed will now show a small thumbnail. From there you can open up the full set of photos to view in detail.
Any photo pinned to an activity that has GPS data now also appears on the activity replay map as a pin. The pin places the photo at the location it was taken along the route take. As with the other photo previews, you can tap on it to view it in more detail.
We’ve also taken a moment to include various other improvements around the app.
If you enjoy using the app please take a moment to post a review in Google Play. Your feedback and reviews really do help.

The Map My Tracks club app integrates with the Map My Track Event planner so events and club rides get featured in the app. This means that a club can publish their group rides and have them listed in the app. Users of the app get all the details of the rides including route maps, file download, live tracking.
The app comes packed full of other features to help club members stay up to date. News, photos and social buzz all get included in the app so everyone stays connected and up to date with club activity. The leaderboard also provides some friendly competition throughout the year.
The social map features club members out riding using Map My Tracks’ live tracking. It’s a great way to keep tabs on riders are when out training or on a club ride.
The Canterbury Bicycle Club app can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.
We’re looking for other clubs to work with to develop the app further. We’re interested in hearing for clubs that have regular club events, rides or runs. If you think your club would be a good fit for this then get in touch.
Map My Tracks lets you create privacy zones around important places like your home or work. The size of the privacy zones can be adjusted to blanket a larger area and, if need be, multiple privacy zones can overlapped to fully obscure the area further. Users will see their own data in full while others will not be able to see the data inside the privacy zone.
Each user on Map My Tracks gets their own personalised email address that can be used to upload FIT, TCX, GPX and photo files. It’s a great way to upload activity data from third-party apps that allow you to export these types of files as attachments to emails. You can find you own personal Map My Tracks dropbox email address on the website at Settings > Account Settings.
Anyone using Map My Tracks Live will appear on the app’s Activity Map. It’s a great way to follow the progress of others while they are out and about. Live tracking is a PLUS feature which is bundled in to the monthly subscription costing $3/month.
People with heart rate monitors or power metres can set custom zones that are displayed in the activity’s charts for detailed analysis. They also let you set your Threshold Power and Heart Rate.
Each activity can be tagged to help organise your profile data. Each tag is then available as a Hub that showcases all the activities sharing that tag. Hubs organise the tagged data over defined periods so you can browser them by month, year or all time.
When activities are sycned or uploaded to the Map My Tracks website they get added to your personalised timeline that breaks down your data by day, week, month, year or all time. The timeline is great for reviewing your performance over time.
Map My Tracks let you sync your activities with your favourite calendar app. The personalised iCal feed can be set up to populate your calendar app with each activity you upload to Map My Tracks. To get your iCal link log into the website then browse to your own profile. The iCal link is at the bottom of the right hand side bar.
When tracking live with Map My Tracks all the available data is streamed live for others to follow. That includes location, heart rate, cadence, power, speed and elevation. Each data set is streamed live to the website and can be followed by others when logged in.
If you use Garmin Connect then you can connect your Map My Tracks with it. Once connected each activity uploaded to Garmin Connect will automatically get synced with Map My Tracks.
Each activity gets its own breakdown of key moments. Moments include weather conditions as well as the moment you were the fastest, the moment you were at the highest elevation, the moment when your heart rate was the fastest and more. Moments also include any photos that have been pinned to the activity.
What’s the Eddington score I hear you say! It’s a neat number to illustrate the volume of long distance bike rides or runs a person does. It can equally be applied to other endurance sports.
The Eddington score is defined as the “maximum number E such that a cyclist has cycled E miles on E days”. For example, an Eddington score of 60 would imply that a cyclist has cycled at least 60 miles in a day on 60 occasions.
It’s a tough score to improve on. In the example given only rides over 60 miles would contribute to an increase in the score. So if your score is 70, only rides over 70 miles contribute to your score. It gets tougher and tougher!
Staying true to the original score created by Author Eddington we have kept all scores on Map My Tracks based on imperial distances, that is, miles in a day.
You’ll find your Eddington score on your public profile on Map My Tracks. It’s also available on the Map My Tracks app inside your profile Insights page. The app breaks down the score by each activity type you have undertaken, while the website is based on all your activities. It also give you a breakdown for the past 4 weeks, year and all time.
The website Head-to-Head also gives you an easy way to compare your score against others when logged into the website.
As it stands, my cycling Eddington score is 53 which means I’ve cycled at least 53 miles in a day on 53 different occasions. Room for improvement I think!
Our ride started with a train journey from Map My Tracks’ home town of Canterbury to London and from there we rode the 73 miles back to Canterbury.
Our ride started out of Stratford and soon picked up the country lanes south of London near Otford. Having started the ride in the fog it soon cleared to sunshine and a maximum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius.
After a coffee and cake stop at Maidstone we started on the home leg keeping to the Pilgrims Way up to the point that we hit black ice and three of us fell like skittles. That made the decision to deviate from our route a lot simpler and we headed for the A20 through Lenham and Charing. After that it was a straight run into Canterbury after the sun had set. Having started the ride at 10:30 we arrived in Canterbury at 17:00 ready for some well earned refreshments.
Thanks to all the riders that joined in on the Map My Tracks Festive Ride 2016 - @ash1, @kj, @paulkemp, @rachelcornish, @zoe_smith, @jonwilliamson, Dave, Rod, Paul and @Nick.

For a while now event organisers have been able to publish their events on the website for our community to use. Now, with the latest update to the Map My Tracks app, events are also available in the app.
Map My Tracks Events make it super simple for event organisers to promote, engage and inform participants with everything about their events. The events listed in the app are coupled to the Map My Tracks Event Planner that provides control on event routes, news, social buzz, photos and more.
The event profiles in the app do what you would expect. They highlight all the latest social buzz around the event. They include messaging, photos, news, attendees, routes and live maps to follow the progress of participants.
Events are free to publish on Map My Tracks and are great for clubs or charities to use for their events.
Download the latest version of the app to get all the event details when you are out and about.
This new feature is great if you organise similar events that happen regularly. It’s perfect for clubs that organise weekly rides/runs or if you are a charity putting on an annual fundraising event.
It’s a feature that has been asked for by event organisers so we are pleased to see if finally go live. It makes managing events on Map My Tracks even quicker than before.
To duplicate an event is simple. First open up the event in the Event Planner. Then click on the Duplicate tab. From there you can set a new title for the event and also set a new start date. That’s it.
The duplication process will copy across everything about the event but leave out who attended or followed it. Once the new event has been created you can edit it as normal to personalise it for the new date.
Using this along side the new Upcoming embed option means that you can easily manage regular events on Map My Tracks and display them on your own website.
As ever, we hope you enjoy the new feature. Keep the suggestions coming as we really do try to work on all of them.
All upcoming events are listed in date order making it a great addition to your own event pages.
Here’s an example of the events on Map My Tracks published by us.
It’s easy to set up. Lists are embedded on your site via an iframe. If that doesn’t mean anything to you then send the embed code over to your web developer and they will be able to add it to your site. It takes just minutes to set up.
Your own embed code can be found when you log into the Event Planner.

We thank each and every one of the million users for taking the time to try out the service. We thank you all for your support throughout the years to make Map My Tracks what it is today.
Back in 2007, we had a dream of creating a community based on the love of the outdoors. Its foundation was around using mobile phones to track your outdoor activities in real time for others to follow live. Back then, pre-iPhone/Android, we relied on some, now classic, Nokia phones to bridge to external GPS devices via Bluetooth. How we have come on!
Since that time, Map My Tracks has grown to be a thriving community of worldwide users who all share a passion for the outdoors. For the data-minded among us, we have put together a breakdown of the Map My Tracks ecosystem which goes to show that you are all stars.
We are always amazed at the variety of activities uploaded to Map My Tracks. Now, nearly 40% of all activities on Map My Tracks are tracked live from all corners of the world.
On a more personal note, I can’t thank the team behind Map My Tracks enough. We are a small team of three that punch well above our weight. We have a passion to exploit technology to make people’s lives more enjoyable. That, and our one million users, is what drives Map My Tracks forward each day.
So what’s next?
The Map My Tracks road map is always evolving. In the short term, there will be some notable updates to the Map My Tracks app. In the medium term, we plan to integrate Fitbit with Map My Tracks to sync data between the two services. In the long term, we plan to make Map My Tracks the home for another one million users.
Again, a million thanks to our amazing one million users.
Nick
Map My Tracks founder
With today’s update all segment leaderboards include the weather conditions experienced during an activity and, mostly importantly, how the wind direction affected it. This makes is super simple to see if the leaderboard if full of tailwind efforts or if a headwind has slowed down your performance.
Each activity is now attributed with headwind, head crosswind, crosswind, tail crosswind or tailwind classification. It also include the wind speed, direction and temperature experienced during the activity. See it in action here and here.
It’s the second weather related update this week which we hope you like. If you’d like to create segments from your own activities then they are easy to set up. Here’s how.
Have fun.
Wind speed/direction, temperature, humidity and conditions are all now available to review for each activity. With the new weather data you can compare performance across difference conditions to see the effect it makes.
It’s a small but handy addition which we hope you enjoy.
This update, now available to download from the App Store, includes a new breakdown that shows off your distance covered, calories burned and goals over each day, week, month and year.
Version 3 of the Step Counter also includes some new characters to choose from. Along with the original family of characters there is now a ghost and robot to help count your steps.
The Map My Tracks step Counter & Calorie Tracker, by Map My Tracks, is a pedometer and calorie tracker that automatically tracks your everyday steps, distance covered and calories burned.
Just carry your phone in your pocket or bag and it will count how many steps you have covered, how far you have walked, and the calories you have burned. It’s always on, with no battery loss, counting how many steps you cover each day.
This update can be downloaded from the App Store now.
Key moments highlighted in any activity include the moment you hit your top speed, the moment you gained the highest elevation, the moment you completed a segment, the moment you hit your maximum heart rate, and the moment you took any picture. Moments also include comments from friends, likes and overall stats.
While we have been testing this we have been enjoying how Moments present activity data in a way that makes it easy to tell what has happened. Moments are presented in a timeline which makes it easy to see the progress throughout any activity.
Moments can highlight your performance in a race. RodArchibald’s 10 mile time trial perfectly demonstrates all his moments. Our very own Nick and his walk showcases the photos that have been pinned to the activity and as they have GPS data the moment location is also featured.
As ever, we hope you enjoy the new upgrade. Let us know what you think on Twitter, Facebook or by email.
If there is an official event set up on Map My Tracks, and you are participating, then click on the ‘Attend’ button on the event page. If there is no official event then either create one yourself or skip to Step 2 By declaring that you are attending the event, your progress on the day will be shown on the event maps.
Download one of the Map My Tracks apps to your iPhone or Android mobile phone. There are two apps to choose from.
Map My Tracks Endurance is a long distance live tracking app. It’s great to track live for well over 12 hours. It’s a super simple app that is designed to only update your location so that others can follow your progress live.
Map My Tracks OutFront is a performace tracking app that is best suited for live tracking for up to 3-4 hours. OutFront measures your performance including speed, distance, heart rate and much more.
Both are available for iOS and Android phones.
On the day of the event, launch the app you’ve opted for and start tracking live. If you are using OutFront you need to set the status to ‘Online public’. If you are using Endurance that you need to ensure it’s set to ‘Visible to everyone’. Once you have started tracking you can pocket the phone and get on with your event.
On the day of the event, there are a few ways that friends and family can follow people’s progress.
If there is an official event on Map My Tracks then you can follow their progress on event maps on the Map My Tracks website. If there is no event then an individual’s progress can be followed on their Map My Tracks profile page on the website.
Our OutFront app also lets friends and family follow user’s live. It’s the best way to follow other people’s progress. Open the app and either use the Activity Map to see who is tracking live or search and open a user’s profile page to follow their progress.
Friends and family can follow people’s progress free of charge through the app or website.
If in doubt on how to get set up get in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook or our support channels.
With the recent update to our iOS and Android apps it is now possible to follow groups of people on the Activity Map. This is makes it a perfect match for club bike rides, or when friends are out on a ride or run together, so that everyone can follow each other’s progress.
The Activity Map features anyone that is tracking live and also shows the last know location of other nearby friends using Map My Tracks. So now if you get split up you can use the Activity Map to help find each other again.
Just like any other activity on Map My Tracks, the Activity Map observes people’s privacy zones so if you pass through, or finish up, within a privacy zone the Activity Map will not show your location. If you have not yet set up Privacy Zones then you can do so within Settings on the Map My Tracks website.
As well as the Activity Map, the recent update also includes a Friends Map that shows only the details of people you follow on Map My Tracks. Just like the Activity Map it follows friends if they are tracking live. Finally, the recent update also include a Profile Map that features a cluster of markers that showcase a person’s public activities on Map My Tracks. In all cases, the maps only feature public activities which gives each person control over what information is shared.
Both the iOS and Android apps have been updated with these new features. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
We’re looking forward to seeing how everyone uses these new features.
The all-new Leaderboard features the total distance covered by you versus other users across each week and month, across all sport types. The Leaderboard is based on public activities only which means that everyone has control over what activities are included for all to see.
During the time that we have been building the leaderboard we have found them to be a great way to discover new users from around the work doing some amazing things.
At present ludoperegrinus tops the walking leaderboard due to the fact that he has been walking everyday for the past month on a journey across Northern Spain.
Likewise, Dezellis tops the cycling leaderboard for the past month largely due to riding a steady 55 miles everyday!
To start climbing the leader board make sure your activities are synced to the website and are made public.
We hope you enjoy the new leaderboards as much as we do.
In short, it’s super simple to migrate from Google My Tracks data to Map My Tracks.
The simplest way is to take advantage of the personal email address given to any Map My Tracks users. Once set up simply email over any activity from Google My Tracks to your Map My Tracks email address.
Here’s how to do it.
Step 1 - First create a free Map My Tracks account.
Step 2 - Get you Map My Tracks email address from Settings > Account Settings.
Step 3 - Export individual activities by email from Google My Tracks to your Map My Tracks email address.
That’s it. Each activity emailed over will be added to your Map My Tracks email account.
Once all the data is ported over it can be viewed within the Map My Tracks android app as well as online.
In addition to all the usual Google My Tracks features Map My Tracks also includes live tracking options, segments, photo sharing and online tools to examine every second of your activity.
If you are one of many who use some kind of Garmin device to record your rides or runs then you’ll love this new feature. You can now connect Map My Tracks to your Garmin Connect account so that each activity you upload there automatically makes its way to your Map My Tracks profile.
Due to the progressive lack of browser support for the old method of uploading from Garmin devices this is a neat alternative that fast tracks the data from Garmin to Map My Tracks.
It super simply to set up and once done you can forget about it until you wish to disconnect the two accounts.
To get started first open your Settings page on Map My Tracks. Then use the options to ‘Connect your Garmin’ and follow the process. Once that is done any new activity uploaded to Garmin will be synced back to Map My Tracks for you to use. It takes around 30 seconds for the sync to complete.
As ever, we’re looking forward to seeing how you all use the new feature. Hope you like it.
Step Counter & Calorie Tracker, by Map My Tracks, is a pedometer and calorie tracker that automatically tracks your everyday steps, distance covered and calories burned.
Just carry your phone in your pocket or bag and it will count how many steps you have covered, how far you have walked, and the calories you have burned. It’s always on, with no battery loss, counting how many steps you cover each day.
Step Counter makes it easy to set daily goals to stay fit, active, and healthy. Friendly reminders help to keep you motivated to reach your daily step goals.
Unlock your full step and calorie history by connecting to the Health App. See how many goals you have met, over each day, week, month, or year, as well as a summary of all the calories burned and distance covered.
Step Counter & Calorie Tracker, by Map My Tracks, is compatible with any wearable device or app that shares data with the Health App.
Step Counter works in the background without affecting your phone’s battery. It uses the phone’s internal step-counting feature available in the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, and iPhone 6S Plus.
Step Counter is available in nine langauages including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Russian & Dutch.
To make it super simple to see all your photos we’ve rolled out a new feature that highlights all the photos tagged to activities in one handy list. It’s like a little time capsule reminding you of your workouts, events, or surroundings.
You can launch your photo gallery from the main menu or from your profile, training room or calendar. The photo gallery includes a full screen mode that lets you browse right back through your photos. You’ll also get a preview map showing the activity undertaken at the time.
Your photo gallery is available for others to browse. They will only see photos tagged to your public activities. You’ll see all your photos, including ones tagged to private activities.
We’ve been enjoying all the photos being uploaded. Next time, take a moment to capture that perfect shot, upload it to Map My Tracks and share it with friends.
Enjoy the new feature.
If you have an event on Map My Tracks then you can now add official photos to show off the event in full. What’s even more useful is that when the photo has location data it gets pinned to the route map so your participants can see the climb they’ll face or the terrain they’ll cover.
It’s easy to add photos to an event. Open up your event in the Event Planner then upload as many photos as you need.
The photos appear on your event profile and are also available in full screen mode as a slide show.
They also appear on each route map page that shows their location on the map. For some added context a caption can be added to each photo that is uploaded.
Photos have made user’s activities really come alive and with this addition of photos to events it’s a great way to get the full flavour of the action.
We hope you like the new feature.

Map My Tracks will be at the event across the weekend. Stop by our team garage along the pit lane and we’ll help get you started.
Along with every activity you can now upload any number of photos to help tell the full story. Photos are great way to vividly share your view down the valley, the foul weather that you experienced, or the buddies that you were out with.
Photos appear alongside activities and can be viewed in full screen mode. As you might expect they also appear on your activity map when the photo has location data. There is no limit on the amount of photos you can add to an activity. Captions can also help to tell your followers even more, and if you mention other Map My Tracks users in your captions they’ll get notified.

There’s more on how to get started with uploading photos in the support centre. You can check out this activity to see photos in action.
We can’t wait to see where you venture outdoors.
The all new Map My Tracks Endurance app for Android, now available to download from Google Play, has been reimagined, rebuilt and relaunched. It’s the perfect companion for any athlete tackling a long distance event that wants to share their progress live so friends and family can follow them.
Map My Tracks Endurance is been specifically designed to conserve the phone’s battery and provide live GPS tracking for well over 24 hours on a single charge. When used, it streams live GPS data back to Map My Tracks where friends and family can follow the progress. It’s designed as a location tracker rather than a performance tracker. That means that there are no bells and whistles - it trackers your location only. If you’re interested in performance tracking then the Map My Tracks OutFront provides fully data streaming of location, heart rate, speed, cadence, power, etc. However, Map My Tracks OutFront won’t stream live for 24 hours!
For now, Endurance is only available on Android but the iOS version is on its way.
Download it from Google Play and have fun using it at your next event.
Now, you can tag other people that were out with you. So if you were out on a group ride, you can tag other riders. If you did a parkrun on the weekend then you can tag other runners that were out with you. It a great way to share and discover new activities.
People can be tagged when you upload a file to Map My Tracks or when you upload direct from a Garmin device. For now, people can be only be tagged on the website. The mobile apps will be updated with this feature in a short while.
It’s also possible to tag people after an activity has been uploaded. If you use the Map My Tracks app first sync the activity online first then use the website to tag the people you want.
All activities have the option to tag people. You can tag yourself to someone else’s activity or tag your own activity with other people. The choice is yours.
We’re really excited to see how this feature develops. As ever, we are keen to get your feedback on this, or any other feature. Let us know what you think.
Now, along with all the social buzz from Twitter and Instagram, the event activity feed also shows off event related activities posted on Map My Tracks by participants.
Just like tweets and Instagram posts it’s super simple to include activities posted on Map My Tracks. Simply tag any activity on Map My Tracks with the event’s official hashtag. It’s that simple. Activity tags, notes or comments featuring the event’s tag will be presented in the feed.
All events have now been updated to take advantage of this new feature. To start seeing activities in amongst the other social buzz first make sure the event has a hashtag set up. Then start spreading the word to participants, and followers, by posting a news update in the event planner.
This is a small, but powerful, addition to the events on Map My Tracks. We hope you like it.
We have completely reworked the file upload process to make sure that segment scanning no longer slows down the import process. Before the recent improvements the option to scan for segments made the import slow and the experience poor. Sorry about that.
Under the new file upload method the segment scanning has been decoupled from the import to let you move on quickly and view the activity details. Segment scanning will still take place in the background and any segments covered will appear on your activity with a short space of time.
This change affects the uploading of individual files and activities imported directly from Garmin devices.
As part of the improvements we have made is much easier to start giving your activities a title. Simple update the title on the activity preview page to set one.
Hope you enjoy using the new improvements.
The Revolve24 event app will take advantage of Map My Tracks’ event platform that provides event organisers with both mobile and web apps designed to foster participant and fan engagement before, during and after the event.
Revolve24 is a closed circuit 24-hour global relay race series. The first, UK event in September 2015 will be held at Brands Hatch on what is a testing 3.9 kilometre track.
The competition starts well before the race! By using many of the familiar Map My Tracks app features, as well as some new features exclusive to Revolve24, soloists and teams will be able to link their GPS performance data and challenge for pole position, as well as the bragging rights of pit garage 1. Based on the miles covered, the feet climbed and average speed achieved during training, the Revolve24 event app will calculate the teams or soloists position on the grid.
The Revolve24 app, powered by Map My Tracks, will provide a great event experience for the rider, team managers and spectators providing real-time category positions during the 24-hour race. Map My Tracks will be used to crunch the numbers across the KOM segment, Sprint, Fastest Lap and most laps completed. The app will also provide event information, training tips and exclusive offers from event partners.
The Map My Tracks widget is basically a remote control option to start, pause and stop tracking without the need to launch the app itself. It’s a one touch operation which makes it significantly easier to track every workout and activity session you do.
The widget works best if you have set the app with some default options like the main activity type or the tracking status.
To install the Map My Tracks widget make sure you have downloaded version 2.3 from Google Play.
As ever, we hope you like the update.
The Map My Tracks Timeline delves into your past history on Map My Tracks and includes every single activity that you have ever uploaded. It gives you an at-a-glance view for your achievements across each day, week, month or year and makes it easy to access any activity to drill down into the detail.
The Timeline includes both public and private activities across any sport type that you have carried out. You can access the new Timeline section from the main menu or from within the Training Room or Calendar sections.
It was our intention to make the Map My Tracks Timeline a PLUS only feature but we like it so much we want everyone to be able to use it. We hope you find it as useful as we do.
In this update we have unlocked all the pro app features to PLUS subscribers. This brings our Android app inline with the recent iOS app update and makes sure that any PLUS subscribers gets all the pro features as part of their subscription.
Another important note to make is that the Android Pro app will no longer be updated and is now discontinued. If you have it installed it will continue to work just fine but it will not benefit from any further updates. From this point forward the free Map My Tracks app for Android will be the only app available to download and all new features will only be available in the free app.
We would encourage all our Pro app users to migrate over to using the free app from now on. We have made sure that all previous pro app users will continue to benefit from all the premium features within the free app without having to purchase an upgrade. As long as you have, at some time, uploaded at least one activity to the website from the Pro app the new free app will automatically unlock all the pro features. If you experience any issues please get in touch through the support channels.
Just like any Pro app user, this new version ensures that all PLUS subscribers benefit from all premium features within the free app as part of the PLUS subscription. This means that if you have subscribed to PLUS through the website you will now have all the premium app features unlocked as part of your subscription.
As well as these changes we have included a host of other enhancements and fixes throughout the app. If you like the update be sure to post a positive review on Google Play.
These new features make the Map My Tracks more flexible, much more integrated and whole lot more fun to use.
Apple Health
Once the Apple Health app is activated, you can share your Map My Tracks activities with it so other apps and services can be updated. Map My Tracks shares the activity time, distance and calories to Apple Health, which in turn might share the data to other apps you have authorised to access the data.
It’s also possible to now have Map My Tracks retrieve your weight from Apple Health so it can be used to calculate the calories burned across your activities. This ideal if you already use another app to monitor your weight. With Apple Health app synced to Map My Tracks you now don’t need to get involved in double entries - it just happens.
You’re in control of the data that is shared with Apple Health with is available on iOS 8 devices.
Wahoo Fitness BTLE
With the app now able to connect to Wahoo Fitness BTLE devices it opens the door to using more heart rate monitors with Map My Tracks. We have always had support to connect to ANT+ devices and now with BTLE included you can connect to Wahoo Fitness heart rate monitors and also the Wahoo Fitness RFLKT screen.
The RFLKT lets you see all your ride stats directly on your handlebars. Once paired with Map My Tracks each time you go out riding your performance stats are shown live on the RFLKT screen. These include elapsed time, distance, speed, pace, heart rate and cadence. Using the RFLKT control buttons you can toggle between data screens, pause or stop your activity, all without needing to get your phone out of your pocket.
Map My Tracks PLUS
Map My Tracks v4 for iOS now also lets you subscribe to Map My Tracks PLUS. When you subscribe to Map My Tracks PLUS from within the app all the pro app features are unlocked together with all the premium website features. It gives you access to everything across both the app and the website under one subscription.
Likewise, everyone that has signed up to PLUS on the website can now use all the pro app features as part of the subscription. So if you are a website PLUS member you can use the free app and have all the pro features unlocked and available to use. These include live tracking, advanced data analysis with charts and it’s all ad-free.
What else?
We’ve included some general improvements:
As ever, lets us know how you get on with the updates.
The suggestions are based on where you might do your own workouts, the segments you cover and also on people you already follow. We have designed the suggestions so that it’s easy to follow other people on Map My Tracks that can help keep you motivated, stay fit, and active.
You’ll find the suggested list of people when you are logged into Map My Tracks and viewing your home page.
Your activity within a privacy zone is hidden from other users and only displayed to you. These zones will apply to all types of activities (e.g. cycling, running, walking).
The privacy zones apply across a number of features across Map My Tracks. For example, if another user:
After an new activity is completed, a static map is generated. This static map will appear in lists of activities and will take into account any privacy zones you have created.
Don’t forget - you can always set your activity to private to hide the entire route!
Creating a privacy zone
Once logged in, you can create a privacy zone via the privacy page in your settings.
A privacy zone requires the following details:
Note - it is advised you don’t position the centre of the zone exactly on the sensitive location, for example, your house. (This prevents people from calculating the centre point where numerous routes appear blocked)
Managing privacy zones
You can view your current privacy zones on the privacy page in your settings. From here you can create more privacy zones or delete current zones, should you deem them unnecessary.
Some segments are on great climbs that make you suffer. Others may be on your regular routes. Each attempt has its own story (or excuse). Now your can tell it.
Every segment now has commenting available for Map My Tracks users. It’s a great way to get in touch with other riders covering the segment. Just like commenting around the site you can use the @name format to send mentions to other users. When you mention a user they will get a notification with an invite to get right back to you.
You can check out all the segments you have covered and also see how you stack up against others on, the recently launched, personal records page.
We look forward to hearing what you have to say on the segments you have covered.
The segment PR log breaks down the details of any segment you have covered and highlights your current position on the segment leader board. It’s makes it easy to see how close (or not) you are from the leader on any segment.
We’re loving the personal records list as it shows just how far off you might be on any segment you have covered. Some might just be within reach of the leader or you might not! Check out your PRs and see how you stack up against others.
We hope you also like the new features.
Map My Tracks, best known for their fitness app OutFront, has released an update to Map My Tracks Events which gives everyone a front row seat to sports events that use the app. Along with live social interactions from events the latest update includes a new GPS timing feature that lets sports event organisers set timed segments along their courses.
Unique to Map My Tracks Events is the option for event organisers to set up, event-specific, timed segments along courses and present a live leader board of results. It works from the GPS data uploaded by participants which is scanned, ranked and presented on a live leader board for the event. The introduction of GPS timing for sports events by Map My Tracks means that event organisers now have a viable alternative to costly chip timing solutions.
Live GPS tracking is at the heart of what Map My Tracks does and Map My Tracks Events takes advantage of over seven years experience in developing sports tracking apps for mobile phones. Using Map My Tracks Events in combination with Map My Tracks OutFront, for iOS and Android, participants of any outdoor event can track and share their progress live online. Map My Tracks Events pools together the live performance of participants and social buzz from spectators so that everyone can follow the action live. Pictures, videos and tweets posted to Twitter and Instagram are filtered to give online followers a front row seat at the event.
The new GPS timing option from Map My Tracks Events works in both a live mode, which shows results immediately after a participant has completed the segment, or from uploaded data. In either case, the participant data is scanned, ranked and listed according to their performance.
Map My Tracks Events lets sports event organisers set up and curate their own event web app that includes live participant tracking, event-specific social buzz and GPS timing. Sportives, marathons or sailing regattas can use Map My Tracks Events to provide an event-specific app to their participants. The app tracks the progress of participants live and provides event organisers with a suite of tools to promote and engage with their participants during the event.
Nick Tatt, Founder of Map My Tracks, said: “With this latest update to our event platform we are able to bring together all the experience we have gained by providing apps for major events like the Tour of Britain. Now, events of any size can easily set up and offer their participants an event app that has all the latest live action and social buzz.”
Since the launch of Map My Tracks Events in January cycling event organisers like Action Medical Research and Pendragon Sports have opted to use Map My Tracks to provide event-specific web apps to their participants.
More events using Map My Tracks can be viewed online.
The latest version of Map My Tracks OutFront includes support to connect Pebble watches with the OutFront. OutFront makes use of the Pebble’s built in sport app to present the activity time, distance, pace or speed all on the Pebble watch face. It offers a great option to avoid having to pull out your phone from your pocket when out running or riding and provides an at-a-glance review of your performance.
We’ve included options to set up and configure the Pebble watch’s display and button behaviour. The standard Pebble sport app can be configured to show either speed or pace. The middle button behaviour can also be configured to suit your preference. It can be set to stop an activity, toggle between pause and un-pause or to switch the display between speed and pace. The Pebble watch face will automatically use distance units set in OutFront’s settings.
To use OutFront with a Pebble watch first pair the watch according to Pebble’s instructions. Once your phone is paired with Pebble’s app then each time you start an activity with OutFront the Pebble watch face will show you the latest time, distance, speed or pace.
OutFront for Android is available to download from Google Play.
OutFront for iOS is available to download from App Store.
A club hub features a hall of fame leader board showcasing who has completed the most distance or elevation in any given period. The segment’s leader board for clubs features a breakdown of only club members over that segment, on any given period. It’s a great way to answer the question of who was fastest up the climb or on the sprint on a weekend club run.
Using the new club filter is simple. When you are logged in both hubs and segments include a option to filter by any club you belong to. If you don’t belong to a club yet then request to join one or set one up yourself.
We hope you like the new options. Let us know what you think.
The latest update of the popular live sports tracking app provides users with an all-new achievements panel, improvements to the app’s menu to make it easier to get around and a quick start option to start an activity. The update also includes an improved search bar that makes it easier to find nearby routes to use in training or to find other users on Map My Tracks.

New in this update is a slide out menu for better access to each section. The slide out menu provides easy access to start an activity, activity history, saved routes, achievements and the online activities from the Map My Tracks community.
The quick start option makes starting a tracking session easier and faster. Now it’s possible to start an activity direct from the app’s home screen or from within any section of the app.
A suite of design changes have been included to make better use of iOS 7 and to provide a more integrated feel. The iphone version of the app is compatible with iOS 5, iOS6 and iOS 7.
This update is the first in a series of app updates that will see closer integration with any sports event using Map My Tracks to track their participants. Map My Tracks provides sport event organisers with a suite of tools to promote their events, track all their participants and broadcast live tracking online.
Since launching in 2007 Map My Tracks has pioneered the use of mobile phones to broadcast sports performance data live across the web. Today, Map My Tracks is used around the world by people passionate about fitness, cycling and running to track, compare and share their outdoor activities.
Map My Tracks launches the official Tour of Britain Tracker app
Map My Tracks, the official tour tracking supplier to The Tour of Britain, is once again set to provide live online and mobile coverage of this year’s Tour of Britain. Map My Tracks has launched the official Tour of Britain Tracker app which will feature live tracking of each of the eight stages, latest news from the race, results of the day’s action and all the social buzz from around the web.
Starting from Peebles on 15th September, The Tour of Britain is the UK’s largest professional bicycle race and is one of the highlights of the British sporting calendar, being the country’s largest free-to-watch live sporting event. With the addition of an iOS/Android and web app from Map My Tracks the tour can now be followed by fans on any connected device.
The Map My Tracks Tour of Britain Tracker will be an essential tool for fans and spectators to stay up to date on the riders’ real-time progress over each of the stages. The app features interactive route maps, details of all the climbs and sprints and is a great way to work out where the best road-side vantage points are. For the duration of the event, Map My Tracks will be tracking the race live and broadcasting the riders’ progress for spectators to follow on the app.
Mick Bennett, Tour of Britain Race Director, said: “We are very happy to be continuing our partnership with Map My Tracks and excited by the launch of the new app. This will allow fans to follow the action in the tenth anniversary Tour wherever they are.”
Nick Tatt, Founder of Map My Tracks, said: “We’re thrilled to be supporting such a prestigious event for the second year running. Last year was a great success so we wanted to come back again with something new for fans. The all-new Map My Tracks Tour of Britain Tracker has something for everyone - all the facts and figures from the race together with live tracking and also a KoM challenge.”
First launched in 2007, Map My Tracks has pioneered the use of mobile phones to stream live performance telemetry for sports like cycling and running. Avid cyclists and runners use Map My Tracks around the world to log their rides. With the introduction of the Map My Tracks Event Tracker, at this year’s Tour of Britain, sports event organisers now have a viable app solution to use at any sports event to help bring their event alive online.
Tatt added: “It’s long been our aim to provide sports event organisers with an event tracker that is flexible, robust and easy to set up and we can’t wait to see how the fans use the Tour of Britain Tracker.”
Map My Tracks OutFront, the same app as used by amateur cyclists around the world, will be used to track the pro bunch live throughout the Tour of Britain. This year Map My Tracks are also challenging cyclists around the UK to ride the climbs of the tour to then compare their performance against the pro riders in the race.
Segments of each SKODA King of the Mountains climbs have been created on Map My Tracks for amateurs to cover before the pro riders pass over them. Map My Tracks will be timing the pro riders covering the same climbs at race pace and posting the times for fans to compare against. A full list of the climbs covered during the Tour of Britain is on Map My Tracks.
To download the official app search for ‘Tour of Britain 2013’ in the App Store and Google Play or visit the web app online for more information and download links.
There are plenty of features to come that relate to segments and GPS timing in general and we’ll keep you up to date on all new features through the Map My Tracks blog but for now we are looking for segment curators.
To make segments more relevant to your local area we are looking for segment curators. As a segment curator you’ll know your local area inside out. You’ll know what routes are popular and what routes are safe for others to cover and set them up on Map My Tracks.
We have already started to create popular segments based around our HQ in Canterbury, UK and with the help of segment curators we want to provide relevant segments where you are.
If you are keen to get involved post a comment below or send us an email to support [at] mapmytracks.com
Segments are timed sections on roads, off-road or over water and are great for sports like cycling, running, swimming, rowing, sailing and many others. They provide an easy way to time your progress over a set route and compare your performance against others.
One of the great features of Map My Tracks segments is that they can be used to cover simple short sections like sprints and climbs or long complex courses like time trial courses or regular training routes. In both cases a full leader board of everyone’s performance it automatically created to compare your performance.
Segments come with their own set of achievements. Achievements are gained for personal bests, pole positions for both men and women across different sports. Each time you cover a segment your relative position in the leader board is measured and ranked. At a glance, you can see how you performed against your own previous efforts and everyone else who has covered the segment.
It wouldn’t be fair to compare a running activity against a cycling activity across a segment so the leader boards are split across different sports. Each leader board also ranks your performance against just your friends. It’s a great way to help keep you motivated to try harder.
Some already popular segments include:
Knoll Hill
Upper Road, Dover
New Dover Road, Canterbury
Fowlmead 10m Q10/42
How to create a segment
Segments are created from activities that have route data. New segments are easy to create.
This creates the segment and scans the activity to populate the leader board.
How to scan old activities
Activities are scanned for segments when they are first uploaded or synced to the site. If you want to scan old activities then:
How can you use Map My Tracks segments
Cycling time trials
Map My Tracks segment are great for time trials. A virtual leader board for the time trial course is automatically created and features anyone that has covered the course. Simply create a segment of the time trial course then any time Map My Tracks users upload their ride data it will be automatically ranked on a leader board for all time, this month, week or day. The Fowlmead 10m Q10/42 has been set up and is logging the performance of anyone on Map My Tracks that covers the course.
Cycling and running hill climbs and sprints
Map My Tracks segments making timing your progress up a climb or on a sprint section super simple. Create segments of key climbs and sprints along training routes to keep a record of your performance and compare against friends.

Regular training routes for all sports
Map My Tracks segments can be used over long distance training routes. A segment of your whole route lets you keep a leader board of your own performance over that route. It’s a great way to benchmark your performance over time.
Rowing
Map My Tracks segments make is simple to monitor the performance of rowers across any stretch of water. Segments can be created for training sessions on rivers or lakes. Each time the data from the training session is uploaded the performance is added to the rowing segment’s leader board.
There are plenty of other uses for Map My Tracks segment but we’ll leave it up to you, our users, to take advantage of them as you need to.
Tips for successful segments
Segments are a great way to keep motivated and try to improve your performance. In providing segments Map My Tracks does not endorse or encourage irresponsible action on the part of our users. Map My Tracks users should obey all traffic controls and signage, comply with all applicable traffic laws and not endanger themselves or other road users.
When creating segments:
We can’t wait to see how you use the Map My Tracks segments and hope you like the new feature.

Starting from Ipswich on 9th September, The Tour of Britain is the UK’s largest professional bicycle race and is one of the highlights of the British sporting calendar, being the country’s largest free-to-watch live sporting event.
The Tour of Britain will feature eight stages in 2012, with each expected to draw huge crowds following the excitement of this year’s summer of cycling. Organisers anticipate the event to be the hardest yet, with a challenging set of stages ensuring that the winner of the IG Markets Gold Jersey won’t be decided until a spectacular final stage in the Surrey Hills.
With such a close finish expected, Map My Tracks will be an essential tool for fans and spectators to stay up to date on the riders’ real-time progress over each of the stages.
Mick Bennett, Tour of Britain Race Director, said: “We are looking forward to working with Map My Tracks who will be taking the online tracking of this year’s Tour of Britain to a new level. Online tracking is a key part of our website during the race week, allowing spectators at home or work who can’t get to the side of the road the chance to be a part of the race virtually.
He continued: “With in excess of a quarter of a million unique visitors to our website during the eight days of the race, the Map My Tracks live tracking will ensure spectators can keep up-to-date with where The Tour is at any time.”

First launched in 2007, Map My Tracks has pioneered the use of mobile phones to record and stream live performance telemetry for sports like cycling and running. Map My Tracks has sports enthusiasts streaming activities live from over 190 countries and provides event organisers with live GPS tracking solutions for cycle races, sailing regattas and running events.

The Map My Tracks OutFront app for iPhone and Android will be used to track the pro bunch throughout the Tour of Britain. The App can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play and used on any ride to track and analyse every detail including speed, heart rate, cadence, power and elevation gain. More on how to follow The 2012 Tour of Britain online.
The Android app turns a smartphone into a portable and live GPS tracker, which plots your progress and keeps track of data such as distance, average speed, elevation and calories burnt.
Live tracking is at the heart of what Map My Tracks do and they have made sure that OutFront for Android can easily be used to broadcast a rider’s progress in sportives or simply to keep friends and family updated on progress. For riders that don’t want to broadcast live, the app records each activity to the phone, which can be shared on Map My Tracks, Twitter or Facebook.
“Our aim has been to make it super simple to get started and use the app,” said Nick Tatt, founder of Map My Tracks. “A lot of effort has been put into making sure that users of the app can quickly get to the features they need, as we know riders have very little time right before setting off on a ride. It just takes two taps to get started and the app does the rest.”
The Android app includes support for certain Bluetooth heart rate monitors while the iPhone app supports a range of ANT+ devices to monitor heart rate, cadence and power sensors, allowing for further analysis after your ride. The app and online community allows users to follow their friends as well as explore routes by other Map My Tracks users, so you never run out of ideas of places to cycle.
With the addition of Map My Tracks for Android to the existing suite of apps it makes Map My Tracks the only viable live tracking solution for mass participation events.
First launched in 2007, Map My Tracks has pioneered the use of mobile phones to record and stream live performance telemetry for sports like cycling and running. This year the 99th edition of the Tour de France starts in Liège, Belgium on June 30 and is made up of 1 prologue and 20 stages.
If you were ever in doubt about the shear effort required to complete the race then take a look at the stand out profile of stage 16. At 197 kilometres long it’s not the longest stage in the race, that’s stage 18 at 222 kilometres, but stage 16 takes in two hor category climbs and two category 1 climbs. The riders pass over the Col d’Aubisque (5600ft), Col de Tourmalet (6940ft), Col d’Aspin (4860ft) and the Col de Peyresourde(5180ft)!
The full set of stages include elevations profiles and those tough enough to try there are TCX, GPX and KML files available to download to so you can ride the stages.
