SalvoConnect Barwon and our partners Geelong Gym’s, City of Greater Geelong, Borough of Queenscliff, Bellarine Railways, K Rock, Edge Clothing and In House Foundation are aiming to raise awareness and much needed funds for those individuals and families in our community experiencing homelessness. This year marks the 11th year of the walk, each year it continues to grow in terms of participants, supporters and fundraising. All funds raised go to local response to housing and homelessness, previous funds raised have; helped open and maintain Lazarus House a drop in facility for homeless persons or persons who feel isolated from the community; contributed to extreme weather overnight responses for people sleeping rough; provided much need financial support to individuals and families that have experienced homelessness or been at risk of in the past year. With SalvoConnect Barwon's Adult Entry Point responding to over 3700 requests for support in the 12 months over 350 of which were people sleeping rough or in makeshift dwellings. Like many of our clients experiences this walk is a journey, with the main walk consisting of a whopping 37kms to be traversed. While the scenery is beautiful along the Bellerine Rail Trail the weather and exposure to wind can remind you of how lucky you are to be going home to a hot shower and comfy bed at the end, unlike many of our clients. 37kms is not for the faint of heart and it takes a lot guts and perseverance to make it to the finish line. The organisers feel that not only is this cause a worthy cause but something the whole community should be a part of- so they have provided entrance into the event for those wanting to tackle 20kms, 11.5kms or possibly getting the whole family involved with a 3.5km distance available. The event starts in Queenscliff and navigates the Bellerine Rail Trail with the finish line on Geelong's waterfront at Steampacket Gardens.
