Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest common cancer in the UK. It’s fast, silent, and vicious — and by the time most people are diagnosed, it’s too late. Over 50% of patients die within just three months. The five-year survival rate is less than 8%, and only 1 in 10 are diagnosed early enough for life-saving surgery.
That needs to change.
This is for my sister, Christine.
Christine dedicated over 30 years of her life to nursing, caring for others with compassion and strength. After retiring from the NHS, she was looking forward to a new chapter — time with family, peace, and well-earned rest. Instead, she now faces uncertainty and the biggest fight of her life — a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
She is currently undergoing chemotherapy, and while she fights with bravery and grace, I want to do my part.
So I’m taking on the toughest physical challenge of my life — a 155-mile bike ride in a single day — to raise funds and awareness for Pancreatic Cancer UK.
To put that distance into perspective: 150 miles is the same as riding from my home to The Liverpool Royal Hospital where she receives her treatment. A reminder of the journey so many families make — physically, emotionally, and financially — when cancer strikes.
Despite having cycling regularly, this ride is no small feat. My longest ever ride before this was 110 miles — and that was before I had double knee surgery nearly 3 years ago. Since then, the furthest I’ve ridden in a single day is just 46 miles. So yes, this is going to hurt — but it’s nothing compared to what my sister and thousands of others are going through.
I’m riding for her. I’m riding for those who never got the chance. And I’m riding to help make early diagnosis the norm — so more people can survive.
