Has anybody noticed an issue with their total mileage on the team distance page ? I seem to have gone from 1250 miles to 433 miles overnight .

Kippdog - Hi Nicola I did try to email the MapmyTracks help desk but had no success I couldn't seem to get through the "code word" section. I'll have another go today if not I guess we need to get Maz on the case !

Nicola Rahman - yes agree - in fact I cant do anything on mapmytracks without the 'upgrade to plus' coming up. Probably not a bad thing I'm not on the leader board - not much cycling lately!! I'll email Maz.

Spot the cold snap in the team totals for last week… I was very glad of the warmer weather this morning.  Also, good news: I see we’ve now clocked up our first trip around the world in team miles - Hurrah!

I’m back to training after 8 weeks off with a broken arm. (hit by a motorbike, be careful out there) and it feels like I’m starting from sratch. A short 6 miler this morning took 6 mins longer than it did 8 weeks ago. With RAB only 8 months away and having to start again, does any-one have any tips.

hughbido - From bike club experience - from broken Ironmen and damaged racers to destroyed normal riders - there is no quick fix. Nobody has found a shortcut. Take it easy and don't expect to rush back. 8 months is fine to get to peak fitness before the big one. Use the RAB Epsom rides 80 miles each day on June 30th and July 1st as a fitness target. A broken arm although given the all-clear may take ages to feel 'normal'. I know nothing about medicine I should add.

chrisvp - All I can say is take it easier than you feel you should initially. Get all the body used to being back on the bike and don't be tempted to push too hard too soon. As you get back used to the exercise load things will come back. You have 8 months so don't rush things however tempting it is to rack up the miles / time right now. Chris

Just been out for a (for me) longish ride - all fine and enjoyable, except for my feet which were freezing!  Any suggestions?  I was wearing decent socks and cycling shoes…!

chrisvp - definitely neoprene overshoes. They helped me a lot with cold feet and can be had quite cheaply. I also go for a pair of thin lining socks under my normal socks this time of year. Cold hands are another bug bear and I cured them by layering of gloves thin liner gloves a decent mid layer and final windproof only outer layer. Chris

hughbido - Hi Geoff First tape over the vents in your shoes underneath and along the sides with electrical tape. The tape comes in matching colours in white black red and blue. This stops water. So even with no overhsoes later on up to Spring I have taped vents. Then Geoffrey Butler cycles in South Croydon have a 20% sales right now where Assos early Winter socks are £12 or so and the mid-Winter ones are a bit more. I use both. The early-Winter socks give your toes some wriggle-room whereas the mid-Winter ones are too thick for that. They are both good because they have a padded sole and they come up way above the ankle so the overshoes can work properly by protecting the join between socks bibtights and shoes.

1ian75 - I have just been given neoprene overshoes from wiggle for Christmas... just need to make sure that the shoes aren't too tight or you cut off the circulation that would otherwise keep the toes toasty. Numbness can be a sign that you're cutting the supply to the nerves in your feet by having the fastenings over the toes and arch of the foot too tight.

Cadence - Is it me or is 90 - 100 cadence tough? That’s for the whole route. Best I’ve averaged is 89 over 67 miles

Ross Barber - You are certainly not alone I find it tough too!! I'm a novice to this cycling lark and can just about manage it on a turbo but when out on the road it drops to about 86 or so depending on terrain. Snow has arrived so back indoors! Cheers.

jlcash - Better than mine. Im averaging about 70 on my hybrid. I have just taken delivery of my new race bike though so maybe things will improve.

Does anyone have any tips on what to eat as your cycling?  I’ve found that I’ve got a limit of 2hrs before performance drops away (I’ll usually have about half a litre of isotonic during that period).  Eating a cereal bar once an hour helps, but there must be a better foodstuff out there that’s more affordable than troughing through 3 gels an hour… any ideas welcome.

akilpatrick - Hi I'm no expert either but have very recent experience of "bonking" as I believe it's known in the trade. On Sunday went out armed with High5 4:1 Energy Source drink and the difference was marked. Almost four hours in the saddle on Sunday with a decent climb included and felt strong all the way through. Had a couple of muesli bars also but I always have those and they didn't make much difference.

1ian75 - Thanks guys - great suggestions that I'll have a go with over the coming weeks. I've not come across the High5 before. I did the Evans Ride-It on sunday at Biggin Hill and found that it is also getting easier as my stamina improves which is promising!

jlcash - I have found that eating a banana after 2 hours I can keep going for another 2. Not sure if it scales up past 4 hours though I'll soon find out. Any advice on whether RAB can be done on normal foods without using gels ets. or is this not advised. I quite like the idea of fueling on bananas and steak pies.

hughbido's avatar

hughbido - JL This is fantastic and beats everyone in the bike club. One banana to cover 4 hours riding is a record. When we stop at a Giveway junction after say 7 miles or so out come the chews the bars the gels and the treats. Anyone for jelly babies? and the bag gets emptied. On the day they will have feed stations at 35 miles and 70 miles. That's one banana to you but to me that's countless flapjacks dried fruit hot coffee 3 bananas and whatever else they dare put on display.

jlcash's avatar

jlcash - Should the feed stations be enough if I were to eat as much as possible at each one and carry a snack for halfway between them or will I still need to use the gels etc. I haven't used them before and the whole concept seems a little alian.
about 1 year, 3 months ago

hughbido's avatar

hughbido - The feed stations will probably be enough for you but take care as endurance theory for cyclists says to nibble every so often so you keep topped-up. I have energy bars between feed stations and treat on energy chews too - like jelly babies only more scientific. Vary rarely take a gel though some in the club swallow quite a few gels on a 100 miler. I stick to bars between feed stations where bananas and flapjack squares are usually present. In my water bottles I use energy powder. All items mentioned are made by Zipvit which many of us like as it is a less sweet cleaner taste than others.
