Olympic sailing GPS tracking

29/08/2008 | Posted by Nick | Permalink

imageWhat a great couple of weeks of sport! The Olympics have come and gone for another four years and we have been blessed with seeing some great sporting achievements. Well done to Team GB for beating all expectations and putting in some stunning performances. Indeed, well done to all.

imageIt was great to see live GPS tracking used in a number of sports to help TV viewers better understand what was going on. I spotted this on the BBC which shows a bird’s eye view of an Olympic sailing race showing distances between competitors and routes taken, not unlike our own display of events. It’s a shame we didn’t see more of this kind of data as it really helps to visualise what is going on. Although this shows the sailing action there are a number of different sports that can benefit from this type of data. Many of the long distance road races, both running and cycling, can make good use of this as well as some of the horse riding events.

All I can say now is roll on 2012 for more of the same.
