We’d like to thank all the sailors and the support team at Whitstable Yacht Club for putting on a tremendous event. It has been a memorable four days with some great sailing, extreme weather and days of perfect sailing conditions.

One of the things that we aimed to do at the event was to bring live tracking to spectators at the venue and also over the web to those that couldn’t make it. In parts this was a success and a failure. The response to what we are doing has been fantastic. Spectators and sailors alike have enjoyed the tracking that we were able to provide. Having reviewed the website statistics it becomes clear why our servers were a little slow on Friday. At its peak at Friday lunchtime we had more people than our servers could handle all trying to watch the action live. This resulted in the server being offline for a short time until we were able to reduce the load a little.

Throughout the event there were some great duels on the water. One of the really useful tools available at Map My Tracks is the ability to replay and compare two tracks side by side. Race 8 saw a great battle between Stenhouse and Trotter. Race 4 has last year’s National champion, Perkins, compared against the newly crowned champion. With all the tracks now public each competitor can pick and choose their tracks and replay them against the winners or losers. It makes for some fascinating viewing.

After four days of tracking we come away from the event with some great ideas on how to improve event tracking so that it truly can bring GPS tracking to the masses. We’ve already started on adding these to the system. Watch this space.
