Musto Skiff UK Nationals - day 1

imageWow! What a day. A big hat tip to all the sailors that raced today. Day one of the Musto Skiff Nationals saw some extreme weather that turned up just as the first start gun was about to go. Reports of 30-40 mph wind speeds, hailstones and mini tornados make it a memorable start to the event.

The calm before the storm!

Sadly the weather also had an effect on the accuracy of the GPS tracking that was done today. With visibility down to less than ten metres at times tracking proved to be a challenge!

As Map My Tracks is all about making GPS tracking accessible to the masses we don’t go in for using expensive black box electronics. Instead, we make sure that the equipment used is readily available and doesn’t cost too much to acquire. It works from regular mobile phones and GPS receivers but with such extreme weather the off-the-shelf units had a hard day today to say the least.

Tracking resumes as normal tomorrow. Lets hope that the weather doesn’t come back for a repeat showing as well.

Keep up to date with the local weather conditions at Whitstable Marine’s weather station (just 20 metres from the beach at Whitstable).
