Map My Tracks now with Fire Eagle integration

imageWe're thrilled to bits to be able to announce that Map My Tracks now plays nicely with Fire Eagle. For those of you not familiar with Fire Eagle it is one of the latest services to be launched by the team at Yahoo Brickhouse which lets you take control of your location data.

So what does that mean to you and I?

In the words of Tom Coates from the Fire Eagle team,

“Fire Eagle is the secure and stylish way to share your location with sites and services online while giving you unprecedented control over your data and privacy. We’re here to make the whole web respond to your location and help you to discover more about the world around you.”

The beauty of Fire Eagle is that it acts as a location hub that puts you in control of which sites or services have access to your location and the latest version of Map My Tracks makes it easy to play with.

Getting started

To get started first update your profile and enable location sharing with Fire Eagle (you’ll need a Fire Eagle account to complete this process). Once enabled you can start to share your location directly from Map My Tracks Mobile. Your location is updated with Fire Eagle in two ways:

Location sharing

  • Tracking: when you start a public track your starting location is shared immediately. It also updates Fire Eagle with your end location.
  • Where am I: lets you set your sharing preferences to automatically update Fire Eagle at regular intervals. Map My Tracks Mobile v1.3.1 lets you specify an update rate to keep Fire Eagle constantly up to date with your location and best of all it’s completely free to make as many updates as you want.

Both of these methods require a Fire Eagle account and your location sharing preferences have to be enabled here at Map My Tracks. Only public track locations are shared with Fire Eagle and like always private tracks are for your eyes only.

As ever, we keen to hear how you’d like us to extend this type of functionality. Let us know what you think and if there are any ways to continue making Map My Tracks even more useful.

So, I guess the fireeagle integration only works one way: from mapmytracks to fireeagle - but not the other way around? I am updating various apps from fireeagle, but I dont see anything in mapmytracks? Cheers!

You’re right. We don’t pull any locations from Fire Eagle just a push to them with your latest location.

For sailing people I would like to see pulling info from Fire Eagle as an option. We are renting out SPOT units in Finland and this would have been a good add-on for Atlantic Ocean goers.

I like the idea to pull in data via FireEagle so that devices like SPOT can be used. This would work well with our recently released event manager that lets race organisers control tracking of multiple participants.
We’ll add it to the feature requests.
